Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences Department of Africana Studies for the Third Annual Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, February 21, featuring Dr. Alondra Nelson, professor of sociology and president of the Social Science Research Council at Columbia University. In her lecture entitled "Racial Reconciliation, Institutional Morality, and the Social Life of DNA," Dr. Nelson examines the recent use of genetic ancestry testing by the descendants of nearly 300 enslaved men and women owned by Georgetown University, whom the institution's Jesuit stewards sold to Southern plantations in 1838 in order to secure its solvency. This lecture, which is open to the entire University community and the public, is part of the Race, Science, and Technology in the Global African World Lecture Series. The Center for Health Equity is among the University of Pittsburgh sponsors.
Reception 5-6 p.m., followed by Dr. Nelson's lecture from 6-8 p.m.
