School Governance

From the School of Public Health Bylaws

The components of our governance body include staff, faculty, and students. Representatives from all three components join in a manner defined within our bylaws to provide the governance of the school through the School of Public Health Council and other standing committees.

School of Public Health Council

Council is a standing committee composed of a combination of elected and appointed members with voting privileges. The chairperson shall be the dean and the vice chair shall be the president of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee. 

Charge

  • Oversee the activities of the Standing Committees
  • Review and approve motions for the creation of our changes to policies and procedures, subject to final approval by the dean
  • Prepare and bring to the general faculty, in the form of a motion, issues that require action or review of the primary faculty body
  • Respond to the needs of the personnel
  • Meet monthly
  • Form ad hoc subcommittees as needed

Monthly Meetings with Open Session

Council meetings are open to all school members and take place January to July on the third Wednesday of the month from 9-11 a.m. via Zoom

A closed session will follow the open session. 

Standing Committees of the Council

All primary faculty are eligible to serve on the four faculty committees with the exception of the FAPTC (restricted to associate professor of professor). All staff are eligible to serve on the Staff Committee. 

Faculty Senate Executive Committee

All faculty with a year-round primary appointment at the school shall be voting members of the Faculty Senate. The Faculty Senate Executive Committee (FSEC) is a standing committee of the senate, serving as their elected representative body. FSEC is composed of three officers: president-elect, president, and past-president. 

Charge

  • Represent the faculty on all matters presented to the council and the school
  • Develop and maintain the slate of candidates for all elected positions within the FSEC, Council, and the Standing Committees of the Council
  • Oversee the annual elections of faculty members to fill the elected positions within the FSEC and the Standing Committees of the Council, as well as the annual committee chair elections
  • Communicate the results of the elections and other information relevant to governance, the academic environment, or the quality of life of the faculty
  • Report on activities of the Council to the full senate at least once/term
  • Convene at least two meetings of the full senate, once/term
  • Undertake other activities that the president deems pertinent to the welfare of the faculty
