Matt Hutchinson has a way of making mental health support feel approachable, personal and even lighthearted. As the embedded therapist at Pitt Public Health, he blends clinical expertise with a genuine passion for helping students navigate the ups and downs of life.
The first in his family to attend college, Hutchinson understands the pressures and pride that come with breaking new ground, and he brings that perspective into his work with students who may be figuring out their own unique paths.
Before joining Pitt, Hutchinson worked as a social worker on a street medicine team, providing care to individuals experiencing homelessness and gaining a deep understanding of what it means to meet people exactly where they are. Now in a university setting, he brings that same person-centered approach to his work with students, supporting those navigating challenges like anxiety, burnout, perfectionism and identity exploration. His flexible, collaborative style draws from psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and solution-focused techniques to meet each student’s unique needs.
Outside of his professional role, Hutchinson has cultivated a growing houseplant collection — though he is quick to admit that not every plant has survived under his care. With humor, warmth and deep compassion, Hutchinson reminds students that growth, much like his plants, takes patience and a willingness to learn along the way.
