Three incoming Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) students have been selected for the University of Pittsburgh’s most distinguished scholarships for undergraduates.
Pushpika Basu and Layla Toomer were awarded Nordenberg Scholarships, and Kailin Gao received a Stamps Scholarship.
Basu, a senior at Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy, and Toomer, from Sacred Heart Academy, are two of just five students across Pennsylvania to receive the Nordenberg Scholarship this year. Chosen from a pool of more than 900 applicants, recipients are awarded full tuition for four years, along with opportunities for leadership development, civic engagement and career preparation.
Gao, who attends the Episcopal Academy in Yeadon, is one of five Stamps Scholars selected statewide. The award recognizes students who demonstrate leadership, scholarship, service, perseverance and innovation. It includes full tuition, room and board, fees and an allowance for books, supplies and travel—plus up to $17,400 in enrichment funds for experiences such as study abroad and leadership training.
“These scholarships recognize the incredible talent, potential and passion students are bringing to public health,” said Ada Youk, PhD, associate dean of undergraduate academic affairs and director of the BSPH program. “We are thrilled to welcome them to Pitt Public Health and support them as they grow into the next generation of public health leaders.”
The scholars will begin their undergraduate studies at Pitt Public Health this fall.
