Contributions to Public Health

  • Designing and testing interventions to improve evidence use: I develop and test strategies with multi-sector collaborations (e.g., community coalitions, community-clinical partners) find, interpret, and apply research evidence in local decisions. My NICHD K99/R00 program combines implementation science, network analysis, participatory modeling, and simulation to examine how structured evidence reviews, decision support, and opinion-leader engagement affect the adoption of evidence-informed chronic disease prevention practices in areas of obesity, cancer, and drug and alcohol use.

  • Community coalitions as intervention systems for chronic disease prevention: I study how multisector coalitions organize collective action and produce policy, systems, and environmental change. Across multisite initiatives, I identify the relational, organizational, and contextual mechanisms that support implementation, diffusion, and sustained community-led prevention. This work links coalition processes to measurable changes in local prevention activity and informs the design of stronger coalition-based interventions.

  • Participatory systems modeling for intervention development and mechanism testing: I use group model building, causal loop diagrams, system dynamics, and agent-based modeling to make complex public health processes explicit and testable. I work with community and academic partners to integrate local knowledge with formal models, identify feedback mechanisms and leverage points, compare intervention scenarios, and refine strategies before or alongside implementation.

  • Network science for intervention targeting and diffusion: I use social network analysis to examine how coalition composition, communication patterns, and cross-sector relationships shape the spread of knowledge, resources, and prevention practices. I translate these findings into network-informed strategies that engage influential actors, address relational bottlenecks, and strengthen the pathways through which evidence and implementation support move across organizations and communities.

  • Community-led and co-produced evaluation of complex public health initiatives: I develop evaluation approaches that combine systems thinking, mixed methods, and community knowledge while sharing decision-making authority with partners. My work examines how evidence is defined, whose perspectives shape evaluative judgments, and how studies can remain methodologically defensible while responding to local context, community priorities, and the dynamics of cross-sector collaboration.
