Many Pitt Public Health doctoral students and some master's students and some master's students receive some type of financial aid in the form of student loans, full or partial scholarships, fellowships, student hourly jobs, or assistantships. While funding is not guaranteed for every student, Pitt Public Health provided more than 5 million dollars in financial aid last year. Check out the school-level tuition and financial aid overview to review options on financing your degree, then contact your department for more information.
MPH/MS
In addition to the school, the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health provides financial aid awards to applicable MPH and MS students at the time of admission. Partial tuition scholarships are available based on academic merit and outside funding opportunities. Current master's students support themselves through loans, scholarships, and part-time employment within and outside of the school and University. The department circulates job advertisements when available to all students. Students may apply for loans through the University's Office of Financial Aid. In general, loan applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
PhD
Financial support is available for PhD students on a limited basis, depending on the term and level of funding provided by an externally funded grant or contract. Students may be appointed as graduate student researchers (GSRs) or teaching assistants with the expectation of 20 hours a week devoted to the appointment. Both types of appointments include a stipend, tuition waiver and medical benefits. Please note, however, the TA position is available on a limited basis.
PhD PHP
The PhD Public Health Practice program does not guarantee departmental funding upon admission. Students may be eligible for limited financial support through teaching appointments, which include a stipend, tuition waiver, and health benefits. Most students fund their studies through federal/state loans, and employment opportunities within the University. In general, loan applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Please note, however, that TA positions are not guaranteed and are available on a limited basis. For financial planning resources, students are encouraged to explore OAFA loan options and consult their faculty advisors for employment and funding leads.
