Contributions to Public Health
- I am a non-invasive cardiologist with commitment to public health. My practice integrates individualized approaches to address social and structural barriers; I initiated a cardiology clinic at the Mathilda Theiss Family Medicne clinic—a long-standing clinic that serves the health of Hill District residents—to embed cardiology where people receive primary care and eliminate geographic obstacles to care. I appreciate public health as occurring in the exam room, the community, and our society.
- My goals as a clinician-investigator are two-fold: (1) identify social risk factors and social determinants that contribute towards and exacerbate cardiovascular health outcomes; and (2) develop novel, scalable interventions to address social risk factors and evaluate their effectiveness, implementation, and scalability in robust clinical trials. My NIH-funded trials have engaged individuals with limited access to clinical research, such as rural individuals and those with limited health literacy. Citations:

- I have focused on social and structural factors in relation to cardiovascular health. These investigations have employed novel approaches to identify modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular adversity and been conducted in collaboration with longitudinal cohorts and administrative data. - I have focused on individual and organizational health literacy because of its importance to health equity, patient care, and preventable health care utilization. I have led initiatives in the American Heart Association to address health literacy and have examined its effect on individuals with cardiovascular disease.
