Contributions to Public Health

  • Advancing Methods for Detection and Localization Tasks: Reliable detection and precise localization are critical for diagnosing disease early and guiding effective treatment. I’ve been developing statistical methods for evaluating detection and localization accuracy (including the FROC tools) that improve how diagnostic systems are assessed for tasks involving multiple lesions or targets.

  • Medical Screening and Diagnostic Evaluation: Breast cancer screening plays a vital role in reducing cancer mortality, and rigorous evaluation of screening methods informs policy and clinical practice. I’ve been contributing to the design and leading the analyses of prospective and retrospective studies on breast cancer screening.

  • Advancing ROC Analysis and Observer-performance Studies for Classification and Prediction: Accurate classification and prediction are essential for developing effective diagnostic tools. I’ve been creating and refining statistical tests and frameworks for the evaluation of markers, tools, and practices in various practical settings.

  • Professional Service and Regulatory Advising: Expert peer review and regulatory oversight are essential to advance rigorous, safe, and impactful research and innovation. I’ve been serving as an Associate Editor for the Biometrical Journal and regularly review for journals such as Biometrics, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Medical Physics, Journal of Medical Imaging, and many others. I have also contributed to national and international grant reviewing and regulatory advisory work.
    • Grant Reviewing: Voting Member, NIH Molecular Cancer Diagnosis and Classification (MCDC) Study Section; member, NIH Special Emphasis Panel; Grant Reviewer, UK Medical Research Council (MRC)
Advisory Panels: Voting Member, FDA Medical Devices Advisory Committee (Center for Devices and Radiological Health), Neurological Devices Panel, and General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel
  • Mentoring Future Researchers: Training the next generation of biostatisticians and clinical researchers is vital to the future of biomedical research. I’ve been mentoring PhD and MS students in the Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science as well as junior faculty researchers in radiology-related fields (including as a faculty at the RSNA Clinical Trials Methodology Workshop).
