Health Policy Programs

The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) has a rich history of educating individuals for careers in health policy and management since its inception in 1950. Our strengths include the areas of governance and management, long-term care, and pharmaceutical economics.

We prepare students in our MPH programs to develop and advocate for public policies, create policy regulation, and work in governmental and public health sectors. MHA graduates are trained to fill professional managerial positions in health care systems, hospitals, health insurance, and other organizations. Health care system managers and executives provide leadership to organizations that deliver health care and related services and must know about management, financing and delivery of services, technological innovations, health policy and regulatory requirements, and public health and disease prevention strategies.

Research published by our nationally recognized faculty members in each of these categories has had an impact on policy at the state and federal levels over the past 10 years. HPM programs are grounded in the faculty’s contributions to advancing the state of knowledge and professional practice of:

  • Healthcare management in both the private and public sectors
  • Health research and scholarship
  • Health policymaking, including the formulation and implementation processes
  • Factors influencing the costs, utilization, distribution and outcomes of public health and health care services
These goals are achieved by the faculty, in collaboration with practitioners, providing graduate education and professional development programs, engaging in scholarship and sponsored research, and by participation in community service and service learning activities relevant to the disciplines represented within HPM.

Pursue a career in health policy and management

The field of health policy and management is exciting and rewarding. Managers and health policymakers have the responsibility of directing organizations through effective management and leadership; making decisions about the provision and delivery of health care services; and developing regulations and policies that impact the lives of individuals, communities, and entire populations.

Graduates go on to accept positions in hospitals and health systems, managed care organizations, integrated long-term care systems, quality management/process improvement, financial/operational analysis, health care marketing/consulting, and health policy analysis and development. We have more than 1,000 HPM graduates working in the health care sector.
