Chronic Pain in People Living with HIV: State of the Science

Tuesday 4/2 12:00PM - 1:30PM
A521 Public Health

Dr. Merlin is a clinician-investigator in infectious diseases and palliative care with a board-certification in addiction medicine and a PhD-trained behavioral scientist. She has directed multidisciplinary chronic pain clinics embedded in HIV patient-centered medical homes, first at the 1917 Clinic at UAB and now at the Pittsburgh AIDS Center for Treatment. Her research mirrors her clinical work and focuses on chronic pain and opioid misuse in people living with HIV and other primary care populations. During her career development award from NIMH, she developed and pilot-tested a behavioral intervention for chronic pain in patients with HIV. She is now conducting an R01-funded full-scale efficacy trial of this intervention. This talk will focus on chronic pain in people living with HIV, including pathophysiology, epidemiology, and evidence-based management approaches.
