Public health student wins APHA poster award

Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) student Simon Fisher received the Best Student Abstract Award from the American Public Health Association (APHA) Pharmacy Section for research conducted through the University of Pittsburgh Vaccination and Health Connection Hub.

Fisher collaborated with Pitt PharmD student Jaden Weiss, Kate Brownlee, director of operations for the Hub, Sophia Herbert of the School of Pharmacy, and Adrianna Gradisek of the School of Public Health. Building on prior research about experiential learning outcomes, the team analyzed both quantitative and qualitative data from pharmacy and public health students engaged in immunization, health education, travel consultations, and interprofessional collaboration.

Their findings highlighted the Hub’s role as a model for experiential learning and preventive care, demonstrating the impact of an interdisciplinary, pharmacist-led team in advancing community wellness.

“Ending my time at the Hub through this research project was the perfect way to encapsulate all the experiential education I received during my two years of service and interning at the Hub,” said Fisher. “It helped me truly see the power of programs like the Hub in promoting community immunization and overall health.”

Ada Youk, associate dean for academic affairs and director of the BSPH degree program, commended Fisher’s achievement: “Simon’s work reflects the best of what we hope for in our undergraduate students—initiative, collaboration across disciplines, and a commitment to improving public health through hands-on learning. His recognition by APHA is well deserved.”

Fisher will be presenting the poster at the upcoming APHA Annual Meeting and Expo at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 3, during the Pharmacy Poster Session.
