Three School of Public Health faculty are among 16 from Pitt who have been named to this year’s Highly Cited Researchers list, an annual compilation of researchers whose work has made a significant impact across a broad range of disciplines.

Published by the data and analytics company Clarivate, the list highlights the small number of researchers across the world who have authored papers that rank in the top 1% by citation in the Web of Science, a collection of journal citations managed by Clarivate that spans the past 11 years. The list is further refined using other quantitative metrics as well as qualitative analysis and expert judgment.

School of Public Health researchers who made the list are:

  • Valerian E. Kagan, PhD, DSc, professor of environmental and occupational health
  • Yulia Y. Tyurina, PhD, research professor of environmental and occupational health
  • Sally E. Wenzel, MD, Rachel Carson Professor and chair, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health

Twenty-four Pitt faculty, including Kagan, Tyurina and Wenzel, were named on the 2024 Clarivate list. U.S. researchers accounted for the highest percentage — 37.4% — of global citations.

“These researchers continue to shape the future of science, technology and academia globally and deliver innovation that drives societal progress,” said David Pendlebury, head of research analytics at Clarivate’s Institute for Scientific Information.
