A Conversation with Student Services Staff Paul Markgraf

image

Paul Markgraf joined BCHS in 2016 as academic administrator. He was motivated to choose BCHS because he believes in what our school is doing and wanted to be a part of it. He previously worked at a “for-profit” university and couldn’t morally justify what they were doing there. Markgraf is proud of the work our students and faculty members do here at Pitt.

What are you passionate about?

I’m most passionate about education. That is what I went to school for and what I feel is the most rewarding thing to do. I was able to volunteer to teach at a local First Tee golfing program for kids. It was an incredible experience and a ton of fun!

What is your favorite podcast/app/book/song/show to binge?

For shows, my wife and I are big into British panel shows. We watch “Taskmaster” and “8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown” (both available on YouTube). Also a super-fan of Succession and Dexter. For music, I have fallen deeply in love with the Bristol based Post-Punk band, Idles. I can’t wait for their 4th album to come out this fall.

How do you amuse yourself outside of work?

I love to golf! I’m absolutely terrible at it, but it’s my favorite thing to do. Every Saturday and Sunday morning, you’ll be sure to find me at Bob O’Conner’s Golf Course. I also enjoy playing music and cooking for my wife.

What is your favorite food, hangout, restaurant?

The best place in town for Chinese food is How Lee’s in Squirrel Hill. Don’t get me wrong, Thai food is fantastic, and Pittsburgh has plenty of it; but there aren’t a lot of options for some generic chicken and broccoli with white rice and Won Ton soup.
