Increase accessibility with automatic captioning on Zoom

Zoom has recently enabled AI-generated live transcription capabilities for easy implementation. While this feature does not work for breakout rooms or in HIPAA- protected scenarios, it is a great option for your next class or meeting.

To enable the feature, click on the Live Transcript button at the bottom of your Zoom window after starting your meeting. This button has a box with CC (short for closed captioning) at the top half it. In the pop-up screen that appears, select the Enable Auto-Transcription button under the Live Transcript field.

The transcriptions are more accurate if you speak clearly and from a space without much background noise. At the moment, this option is only available for the English language.

Your students or the other people in your meeting or event will have the option to Hide Subtitles from their own Zoom window. To do this, they will need to click on the carrot sign in the top right of the Live Transcript button. In the pop-up that appears, click Hide Subtitle.

Other options, like increasing the text size of subtitles, are available in the Accessibility tab in Zoom Settings, which can be accessed through the “Subtitle Settings…” option in the pop-up window that appears after clicking on the carrot sign in the top right of the Live Transcript button.

Finally, to save your transcript, you need to click on the View Full Transcript option from the pop-up window, and then hit the “Save Transcript” button located at the bottom of the screen that appears. Once your transcript is saved, you can view its location by clicking on the “Show in Folder” option that appears in the bottom right of your Live Transcript window.
