MCH and BEST at Allegheny County Health Department

The Allegheny County Health Department’s MCH and BEST programs is to improve the quality of life and health of mothers, infants, children, and families in Allegheny County with efforts focused on the most vulnerable.

The issues mothers and children face in Pittsburgh are significant. Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die within one year of giving birth than White women. Black infants are 2.5-3 times more likely to die before the first year of life than White infants. The leading cause of death for Black infants in Allegheny County is prematurity.

“ACHD’s Maternal and Child Health program works closely with Pitt Public Health as a member of our MCH strategy collaborative. A great partnership might be a shared PhD trained MCH epidemiologist appointed to the MCH program to assist with data collection and analysis associated with the MCH population in Allegheny County. This opportunity would further develop public health’s ability to influence both academia/education and governmental service delivery and surveillance,” says Dannai Wilson, who is responsible for managing the health department’s response to maternal and child health service delivery, “utilizing data to inform our approach, provide availability of evidence-based interventions at no cost to the public, deliver resources equitably to the individuals we serve.”
