SVC asks researchers to coordinate collaboration efforts

Dear Colleagues,

I am proud of how the University of Pittsburgh has pulled together with our communities during this time of crisis. It is a gift to have a mission that enables us to quickly mobilize our teaching, research, and service to be collaborative partners.

As we turn to the fall, many of us are considering how we will best engage our energy and that of our students. Various programs are considering online forms of community engagement and considering how they will approach community-based organizations and public partners who may wish to collaborate. There are other colleges and universities in the area that will seek to do the same.

I ask that prior to reaching out to a potential collaborator, you familiarize yourself with Pitt’s Engagement and Outreach Map to see who else from Pitt may have an existing relationship there and to consult with them about how to best initiate a conversation. We want to tread carefully, with the greatest respect and empathy for the colleagues who are already engaged and the community groups that may be fielding a large number of requests at this time.

Additionally, if your ongoing community-engaged work is not already reflected on the Map please log in to enter or update your current activities so that others know of your existing relationships. You will also find an option to enter community-engaged work that was initiated specifically to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. Please select the option that best fits your work – ongoing or COVID-19 – so that we can have an accurate inventory of our partnerships and collaborative efforts.

If you have any questions about the Map or how to get involved with community engagement while at Pitt, please contact these members of our Community and Governmental Relations team:

  • Lina Dostilio, Associate Vice Chancellor, Community Engagement
  • Jamie Ducar, Director, Community Engagement
  • Daren Ellerbee, Director, Pitt’s CEC in Homewood
  • Kirk Holbrook, Director, Pitt’s CEC in the Hill
  • Alex Toner, Assistant Director, Community Engagement

Sincerely,

Kathy Humphrey
Senior Vice Chancellor for Engagement and
Secretary of the Board of Trustees
