Position Title:  Center for Public Health Practice Applied Experiential Learning

Positions at the Allegheny County Health Department

Pitt Public Health’s Center for Public Health Practice will be coordinating two student experiential learning positions at the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) beginning in spring 2020.

These long-term student experiential learning positions will immerse students in work at ACHD and will prepare students for careers in public health practice.  These positions will start in January of 2020.  Students are expected to serve in their position for at least two-three semesters at 10 hours per week.  A $750 tuition scholarship will be provided at the end of each completed semester.  Previous health department experience is not required.  These positions may not serve as practicums; however, admission to this experiential learning program guarantees placement in the Pittsburgh Summer Institute.

Position 1:  Community Health and Disease Prevention/Assessment, Statistics, and

Epidemiology Position (Location: Downtown)-See below for more detail

The ACHD is required by law to follow up on all animal bite exposures to prevent the spread of rabies, which is almost always fatal in humans.  All reported exposures are investigated, and recommendations are made for follow-up care and/or prophylaxis for rabies, if needed.  ACHD also provides rabies testing for animals involved in human exposures to determine whether prophylaxis is needed.

The project has two main components:

1)         Investigation of animal bites reported to ACHD to ensure proper follow up and care; and,

2)         Analysis of the 2018 animal bite data.

The student’s work in this position will involve following the protocol for animal bite follow-up, making telephone calls, cleaning and analyzing data, preparing tables and graphs, and writing a report for the ACHD website.  The student will be working part time with the Immunization Program and part time with the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Group.

Position 2:  Bureau of Community Health Promotion & Disease Prevention (Location:

Wilkinsburg)- See below for more detail

The Chronic Disease & Injury Prevention Program seeks a student to work on two different yet related project areas:  The Traffic Safety Education Project and The Mon Valley District Office Project.  Both of these projects are focused on the analysis and communication of data to better serve the residents of Allegheny County.

The student’s work in this position will involve assisting in data collection, analysis and visualization to gain a better understanding of the need in the Mon Valley and assist identifying gaps in service and in matching the need to providing services. This position is unique in that it will work across the department to help to break down barriers between the programs in how the ACHD is publicly communicating about or work and also in how the ACHD presents data to the community.
