MPH core curriculum changes in effect fall 2018

To incorporate the 22 foundational competencies added as part of the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)’s new accreditation criteria, Pitt Public Health has restructured the MPH core curriculum for fall 2018.

PUBHLT 2033: Foundations in Public Health and PUBHLT 2034: Public Health Communications were added to incorporate a number of competencies. The classes are one credit and two credits, respectively.

Foundations will explain public health history, philosophy and values. This class will help students to identify the core functions of public health and the 10 Essential Services. In addition, students will understand the role of quantitative and qualitative methods and sciences in describing and assessing a population’s health after taking this course. Most of this content will be delivered through online modules, but students will also meet for an in-person session during the first week of classes.

Among other things, Communications will give students practice writing and presenting to different audience sectors and describing the importance of cultural competence in the communication of public health content.

Additional curricular changes include condensing EOH 2013: Environmental Health and Disease into 2 credits and revamping the now-retired PUBHLT 2016 Capstone: Problem Solving in Public Health course name and number to PUBHLT 2035: Applications in Public Health as the changes to this course focus on applying the knowledge that was learned throughout the MPH degree program.

The other courses in the MPH core have undergone revisions which have been approved by the school’s Educational Policy and Curriculum Committee. More information about the competencies is available on the MPH Core Curriculum Web page.
