The Alumnae Association of Mount Holyoke College honored EPI's SHERYL KELSEY with the Alumnae Achievement Award in 2017. This award is presented to alumnae whose accomplishments and service to society exemplify the values and virtues set forth by the College.
Throughout Kelsey's career she was a role model for women pursuing public health careers in statistics and epidemiology. After graduating from Mount Holyoke with a degree in mathematics and a minor in chemistry, she became the first woman to be granted a doctorate in statistics from Carnegie Mellon University, where she also received her master’s in statistics. Upon completion of her doctorate, she joined the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, where she was a tenured faculty member in the department of epidemiology and served in many roles, rising to director of the Epidemiology Data Center.
During Kelsey's career she published more than 250 papers in peer-reviewed journals and received a number of research grants. In addition to her research, she taught classes and served as primary advisor to nine doctoral students and served on more than sixty doctoral committees.
Kelsey dedicated her career to the research and design of clinical trials and registries in the fields of cardiology, diabetes, women’s health, neurology, and ophthalmology, demonstrating the highest standards of scientific inquiry in a truly collaborative spirit. Her research directly impacted women’s health, investigating the epidemiology of cardiovascular risk factors in women and evaluating menopause and risk factors for coronary heart disease.
A member of the Delta Omega honor society in public health, Kelsey was elected fellow to both the American Statistical Association and American Heart Association and named the Pittsburgh Statistician of the Year in 2009. Her exceptional career led to groundbreaking research, impacting the understanding of women’s health for years to come.
