60th GSPH Convocation Set for May 2


The 60th Annual GSPH Convocation will take place on Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception immediately following in the music hall foyer.

This year’s convocation address, “Unnatural Disasters: Pandemics, Hurricanes, Politics, and the Individual,” will be presented by John M. Barry, a prize-winning and New York Times best-selling author whose books have won more than 20 awards. The National Academy of Sciences named his 2004 book The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History winner of the Keck Award for the year’s best book on medicine or science. He has advised the Bush and Obama administrations, as well as other federal, state, and World Health Organization officials on influenza pandemic preparedness and response and risk communication.

He serves on numerous advisory boards and committees, including at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before becoming a writer, Barry coached football at the high school, small college, and major college levels. Currently distinguished scholar at the Center for Bioenvironmental Research of Tulane and Xavier Universities, he lives in New Orleans.
