Join IDM to commemorate this NIH-funded study that has been ongoing in Pittsburgh since 1984, following approximately 3,000 men to gather information on the epidemiology, virology, immunology, and pathology of HIV. Featuring remarks by PI's Charles Rinaldo and Jeremy Martinson, plus presentations by national experts highlighting the history and future of this important study.
Drug resistance has emerged to all antimalarial drugs. This talk will discuss some classic problems in management of drug resistance, ways to slow down resistance evolution, and proposed changes to global malaria management strategy in different zones of malaria endemicity.
The Real-Time Application for Portable Interactive Devices (RAPID) is an Amazon cloud-based system designed which functions as a Saas and Paas system to receive electronic information, analyze it and respond to the sender of the information within 24 hours. The modular system accepts a variety of data types which may be evaluated by internal federal data analysts in real-time. The bidirectional design permits the transmission of timely emergency information to health care providers or other individuals during public health emergencies.
CDER scientists chose to develop RAPID, a bidirectional communications and analytics systems platform, to solve many problems noted above during a national emergency and other FDA regulatory requirements. The key IoT elements in the RAPID instance are to be a bidirectional data communication system, have a cloud base system which is flexible, scalable and provides a data lake of information with analytic tools to evaluate real time and streaming information and provide real time situational awareness to leadership enabling collaborative regulatory decision making and communication of key health data back to individuals in the field.

Presented by Pitt Public Health's Center for Social Dynamics & Community Health and Public Health Dynamics Laboratory, and the Pitt Clinical and Translational Science Institute's Biomedical Modeling Core, this conference will bring together national leaders from across the country to discuss the integration of modeling approaches into the field of behavioral and community health sciences. Through panel discussions and breakout sessions, attendees will learn about existing research, discuss associated challenges and opportunities, and chart a path forward for this emerging field. In this hands-on workshop, learn to use FRED (Framework for Reconstructing Epidemiological Dynamics), a flexible, agent-based modeling platform that can be used to model diverse situations, including infectious diseases, chronic conditions, demographic changes at the population level, and the effects of human behavior. Workshop participants will become familiar with the FRED platform, learn the basics of incorporating and simulating agent behavior in simulation models, and create and run their own behavioral models using FRED Web, an online interface in which FRED models can be designed, run, and analyzed.
FRED can be used to predict outcomes of an epidemic, such as epidemic curves and disease incidence, and is a tool for evaluating interventions, such as school closure, social distancing and changes in vaccination behavior. Using census-based statistically representative synthetic populations, FRED captures the demographic and geographically heterogeneous characteristics of actual populations, including realistic neighborhood, household, school and workplace social networks.

Lyndsay Avery's Dissertation, Tim-3 co-stimulation promotes short-lived effector T cells, restricts memory precursors, and is dispensable for T cell exhaustion, includes findings that have significant implications for the development of anti-Tim-3 antibodies as therapeutic agents.
Renjian's thesis, Neuroprotective microRNAs combat HIV associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) pathogenesis, states that nearly more than half of individuals living with HIV-1 infection present with some degree of neuronal impairment. Since, currently, no treatment is available to prevent or treat HAND, devising a method to manage HAND can help to improve the quality of life in HIV-1 positive population.
Harley's thesis, PrEP Awareness in Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) and Transgender Women Who Sought Services from the Allegheny County Health Department HIV/STD Clinic, 2016-2017, aims to provide insight into PrEP awareness in Allegheny County, PA among MSM, transgender women, and gender non-conforming individuals who were assigned a sex of male at birth attending the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) HIV/STD clinic.
Matt's findings in his thesis, Impact of Zika Virus on Human Dendritic Cells, contribute to our understanding of basic ZIKV : DC interactions, and may help to provide a better understanding of ZIKV pathogenesis leading towards the development of effective interventions to protect and treat those who may become exposed to ZIKV.
Abigail's essay, Baby and me, without Hep C: An early intervention education campaign to better the outcomes of HCV in mothers and neonates, examines the need to intervene to improve birth outcomes and improve postpartum HCV treatment adherence in women with SUD.
Bethany's thesis, Heme-induced acute lung injury by inflammasome activation in vascular endothelium, includes findings that could decrease morbidity among patients and improve the overall health of the public.
Megan's Essay, Validation of a real-time polymerase chain reaction assay for sensitive quantification of Francisella tularensis strains, hopes to further vaccine development for an extremely infectious disease in humans and animals.
The objective of Emily's thesis, Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO): Cost-effective analysis of horizontal vs. vertical surveillance, is to compare focused enhanced surveillance for populations at high-risk for MDRO colonization to the current vertically oriented (organism focused) surveillance strategy. A cost-effective analysis will be performed to determine which approach is more economical.
Vatsala's thesis, Clostridium difficile infection spread within the hospital environment, focuses on the role of environment in the spread of CDI within the hospital environment in a non-outbreak setting.
Jen's Thesis, Using Tissue Culture to Model Early Events in Francisella tularensis Pathogenesis, suggests lung epithelial cells could have a role in F. tularensis early pathogenesis and dissemination.
Parichat Duangkhae's Dissertation, Defining Dengue Virus Infection in Human Skin, may provide a mechanism for the epidemiologic observation that African ancestry protects against severe dengue. Her findings highlight the importance of skin and the complex interplay between resident and immune skin cell populations in DENV infection and dengue pathogenesis.
