PhD
  • Professor
  • Faculty in Epidemiology

My work is focused on the design, coordination and analysis of multi-center cohort studies, Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) studies and randomized clinical trials (RCTs). I am currently a multiple Principle Investigator of the data coordinating center (DCC) for the NIH-funded 1) Physiology Of the Weight Reduced State (POWERS) consortium, which aims to determine the extent, durability and metabolic and biobehavioral mechanisms for physiologic adaptations to weight loss, 2) Percutaneous Intervention Versus Observational Trial of Arterial ductus in Lower gestational age infants (PIVOTAL), which will inform best practices in the clinical care of patent ductus arteriosus in preterm infants, thereby helping reduce chronic lung disease, intestinal injury, brain damage and congestive heart failure, and 3) the ShOrt and NOrmal sleep duration in Insomnia (SO, NO Sleep) Study, which will evaluate sleep phenotype as a predictor of response to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Trazodone, respectively, for insomnia, thereby informing personalized medicine. I am also the director of the DCC for a study evaluating novel assays for Hepatitis B (funded by Abbott), and a co-investigator of the DCC for 1) a PCORI-funded CER trial of hypothermia versus normothermia for treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (COOL PRIME) and 2) the Cerebral Palsy Research Network (CPRN), a non-profit organization which aims to optimize the health and wellness of people with CP through research, education and community programming. I am the course director for EPIDEM 3183, "Reading, Analyzing and Interpreting the Public Health and Medical Literature," and co-chair of the Epidemiology Student Liaison Committee. My work is regularly published in high-impact journals and reported in the national and international news (see links below).
