Personal Statement

Jia Yao Phuah is from Malaysia.  Jia Yao received a BA and an MA at the University of Cambridge in the UK.  In 2013, he received his PhD in the Immunology Graduate Program at the University of Pittsburgh under the mentorship of Dr. JoAnne Flynn.  His PhD project was on the understanding the role of B cells and humoral immunity in Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection of non-human primates.  In 2017, he joined the Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology as a Postdoctoral Fellow with Dr. Joshua Mattila.  Today he is working on how Human-Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) predisposes HIV positive individuals towards severe Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Outside of lab, Jia Yao is an avid foodist and enjoys all forms of edibles.
