Prior to leaving for the Peace Corps, I completed my training at the University of Missouri. My Peace Corps service included work with the Agricultural Extension Project in West Bengal, India, in a village in the Midnapore District. My primary role involved working with the block development and agricultural officer in promoting the use of high-yielding varieties of rice and implementing multiple-crop cycles. During a famine and drought period, I also worked for three months on a special deep tube well installation project (sponsored by UNICEF and CARE) in Nawada District, Bihar State. This project targeted remote locations with open wells and non-potable water. My role included organizing village labor and supervising manual drilling and the hand-pump installation process. At end of service, I returned overland through Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey.
