Global Health Student Scholarships

Travel Scholarships Program

The purpose of the Global Health Travel Scholarship program is to partially support international travel expenses for master or doctoral students enrolled in one of the six health science schools at the University of Pittsburgh who want to conduct projects in a middle- or low-income country or resource-poor setting. The project must address a health issue of importance to the host organization and local populace. 


  • Full-time, degree-seeking master- or doctoral-level students in one of the six schools of the health sciences at the University of Pittsburgh Oakland Campus are eligible to apply. 
  • Applicants must be enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh at the time of application and when using the award. They must also be enrolled full time and in residence at the University of Pittsburgh for at least one term after completing the project. 
  • For purposes of this grant program, a project is defined as “an activity that contributes new knowledge that can be used by participating partners or agencies for further research or program development, contribute to program improvement, or be used as pilot data for a thesis or dissertation.” A variety of activities can qualify, such as laboratory and bench science, data collection, needs assessments, policy analysis, program evaluation, health education delivery, and surveillance.  
  • Applicants may propose participation in a new project, join in an existing project, or continue in a project in which the applicant participated in the previous year. 

Allowable Expenses

• Ground and air transportation to and from the project site 
• Lodging and meal expenses while participating in the project 
• Visa and immunization expenses required for travel to the project site 

Amount and Number of Scholarships

The maximum scholarship amount is $2,000 USD. Applications will be reviewed by a faculty committee with representation from multiple health science schools.  The number of awards granted will depend on the number and quality of applications received.

  • Thursday, December 1, 2016: Call for applications released.
  • Friday, February 10, 2017: Applications due. 
  • Friday, March 10, 2017: Earliest notification date.
