Drug resistance has emerged to all antimalarial drugs. With resistance to the artemisinin-class drugs confirmed in 2008, there are now no available options for last-line-of-defense drugs should these new resistant genotypes spread worldwide. Dr. Boni will present some classic problems in drug-resistance management; demonstrate that some drug distribution methods may act to slow down resistance evolution; verify these results with individual-based microsimulations of malaria epidemics and drug-resistance evolution; and propose some changes to global malaria management strategy in different zones of malaria endemicity.
