Lycia Neumann - 2017 Center for Global Health Student Travel Scholarship Recipient

As an international student, LYCIA NEUMANN always had the intention to take the skills she has learned at Pitt Public Health back to her home in Brazil. Because of the scholarship, she was able to study the profile and unmet needs of cancer patients' family caregivers in Brazil. Her experience has taught her important lessons, such as, " Go with a good plan and a contact. Don't wait to develop your project until you get there."

“Pittsburgh is a great city,“ said BRENDAN DECENSO. “But take opportunities to go work elsewhere – it will change you for the better.” After seeing frustrating inequalities among countries related to HIV, he was inspired to practice medicine internationally. He organized a project for himself in Lima, Peru and says that h would not have been able to have the experience he had without the aid from the scholarship.   

HPM’s Ware awarded Goldstein Award for work on Emergency Law Inventory (ELI)

JD/MPH student ALIX WARE (HPM ’19) was awarded the 2017 Bernard D. Goldstein Award in Environmental Health Disparities and in Public Health Practice for her work on the development of the Emergency Law Inventory (ELI). Created to help individuals navigate through 1,500 law summaries impacting volunteer participation in disaster scenarios, ELI provides emergency volunteers with easy access to the laws most relevant to become better prepared for e... 

Epi students honored with Iris Marion Young Award for Social Justice

ABIGAIL R. CARTUS (EPI '21) and C. ELIZABETH SHAABAN (EPI '18) were honored by the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies program and the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at Pitt for cofounding Pitsburgh Lead Action Now, a citizen-led group working for the lead-free drinking water in Pittsburgh. The Young Award honors work that promotes social justice, and recognizes that social activism takes many forms.   

HPM students take second at 2017 Robbins Case Competition

Congratulations to Pitt Public Health’s team on their second place finish at the Robbins Case Competition at Baylor University. JOHN CORDIER (MHA/MBA), ZACHARY HAYES (MHA), and AMANDA WILKINS (MHA) were the students who competed in the event. HPM’s KEVIN BROOM (second from right, MHA and MHA/MBA program director) was there to cheer them on, and CHANDLER CAUFIELD (MHA/MBA) attended as an observer. She will be on the team representing us next year.... 

Award-winning posters recognized at annual IDM Research Day

This September, the Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology recognized student research poster winners at the annual IDM research day.  Students winners were awarded prizes in various categories during the next day's IDM annual meeting and picnic at North Park.   

Tucker’s pregnancy-focused startup wins $2500 at Blast Furnace Demo Day

PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE - Congratulations to BCHS student ALYSIA TUCKER, who took home $2,500 for her Best4Baby startup that connects soon-to-be mothers with local, affordable doulas. Tucker said her company will only match expecting mothers with fully-trained doulas who have undergone 30 hours in classes and have completed a certain number of births successfully.  

IDM's DELUCIA, RAVIKUMAR, and WOELL bring home 2017 Dean's Day departmental awards

IDM awarded departmental prizes in the 2017 Dean's Day student research competition to DANA WOELL of the MPH-PEL program in the MPH category, PRANALI RAVIKUMAR in the MS category, and DIANA DELUCIA in the PhD category.

Pitt biostatistics student Yi Liu wins American Statistical Association best poster award

Doctoral student YI LIU (BIOS ’17) was awarded the Mihaela Serban Best Poster Award in the American Statistical Association (ASA) Pittsburgh Chapter's 2017 poster competition for her presentation "Copula-based Score Test for Large-scale Bivariate Time-to-even Data, with an Application to a Genetic Study of AMD Progression." 

Biostats student Zhe Sun awarded 2-year fellowship by Children's Hospital

Doctoral student ZHE SUN (BIOS '19), co-advised by WEI CHEN and YING DING, has been awarded a 2-year Research Advisory Committee fellowship for 2017-18 supported by Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Congratulations Zhe! 

Biostats student TIANZHOU MA wins travel award attend JSM

The paper, "Biomarker detection and categorization in RNA-seq meta-analysis using Bayesian hierarchical model" by doctoral student TIANZHOU MA (BIOS '18) has won a travel award in the SBSS 2017 Student Paper Competition to attend the Joint Statistical Meetings in Baltimore (July 29 through Aug, 2017). Ma is currently a fourth year doctoral student in biostatistics under the supervision of professor GEORGE TSENG. 

Biostatistics student wins first place in JSM poster competition

Doctoral student ZHONGYING XU (BIOS '19) was awarded first place in the Joint Statistical Meeting (JSM) 2016 Biopharmaceutical Section Student Poster Award Competition for her submission "Optimal Sample Size Determination for Adaptive Seamless Phase II/III Design."
