Congratulations to Susan Manzi (EPI '92) for being honored with the Catholic Youth Association's 2019 John E. McGrady Award. She was honored at the 45th Annual Art Rooney Dinner and Auction on April 29, 2019. Manzi is chair of Allegheny Health Network Medicine Institute and is an international leader in lupus patient care and research. The award recognizes individuals who are dedicated to community service as exemplified by John E. McGrady, former Allegheny County Commissioner, father of 14 children, and a community activist.

Susan Manzi (EPI '92) graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and received her MD from Pitt Medicine. She completed her medical internship and residency at Duke University Medical Center where she was appointed assistant chief resident, after which she completed her fellowship in rheumatology at UPMC, and received her MPH from Pitt Public Health. Manzi is currently professor of medicine and chair of the Medicine Institute at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh. She founded the Lupus Center of Excellence as a new model for integrated patient care and clinical translational research for patients with chronic autoimmune diseases, a model that she has published and which has inspired similar efforts in other chronic diseases. Manzi provides care for patients from around the world who travel to Pittsburgh because of her reputation in diagnosis and management.

Manzi grew up in Crabtree, Westmoreland County, a town of about 400 people. Her mother and father were first generation Italian immigrants who owned a grocery store. Following high school, she made the leap from Crabtree to the University of Notre Dame and then to the University of Pittsburgh. Manzi, ever sensitive to the suffering of patients, began to concentrate on autoimmune diseases, devastating diseases like lupus, which disporportionately affects women. She now has published over 200 articles related to autoimmune disease and was recently named national chairperson for Lupus Foundation of America. Manzi has been named one of the Best Doctors in America by U.S. News and World Report.

Manzi will receive her award at the 45th Annual Art Rooney Award Dinner and Auction on Monday, April 29, 2019 at the Westin Convention Center Hotel alongside Eva Tansky Blum, Sally Wiggin, and Ryan Shazier.
