EPI's Kriska receives Provost Award for Excellence in Mentoring


ANDREA KRISKA, has received the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring. She is a professor and director of the Prevention/Lifestyle Intervention Area of Emphasis in the Department of Epidemiology. An expert in physical activity epidemiology, she has devoted her career to the study of diabetes and minorities by developing targeted interventions for these groups. She currently leads the study, “R18DK100933-02 Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Change; Impact on Lifestyle Intervention Effects for Diabetes Translation” as principal investigator.

Kriska is an exceptionally committed and remarkably effective advisor and mentor for students, having served as the primary advisor and committee chair for 14 doctoral students, 22 master’s students, and 11 post-doctoral trainees, as well as co-mentor to many others. Altogether, her students have published 69 manuscripts in top rated peer review journals with Kriska as their mentor. Her students are well prepared to be highly successful, going on to top positions, with continued excellence in research, education, and service.

Kriska is truly dedicated to the University of Pittsburgh and to the Department of Epidemiology’s goal of educating the next generation of scientists. Her guiding principle is that her students complete the circle that defines her career. We congratulate her on this prestigious -- and well-deserved -- award.
