Lopez (BCHS ‘90) profiled in Forward magazine

FORWARD MAGAZINE - Ivette Lopez (BCHS ‘90)  has dedicated her professional life to pursuing health equity for Latinos and other disadvantaged populations in the United States.

A native of Puerto Rico, Ivette's work and research has focused on addressing diverse health problems, including HIV/AIDS, Diabetes and heart disease as well as obesity. After graduating from Seton Hill in 1981 with a degree in sociology and social work, Ivette earned a master's degree in public health from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and her doctoral degree in social and behavioral sciences from the University of South Florida.

Ivette has had experience at the local, state and national levels, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. She currently serves as an associate professor of Public Health, Behavioral Science and Health Education for the Institute of Public Health at Florida A & M University and is also the director of Latino Health Initiatives at the University's Center for Health Equity. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the University's 2016 Trailblazer Award for her efforts with the Latino Health Initiative. Ivette and her husband of 30 years, Saint Vincent College alumnus Thomas Abbruscato, have one daughter.
