Commissioner Award Presented to Pitt Public Health Alumnus Michelle Clayton

Michelle Clayton, a child-abuse pediatrician with CHKD’s Child Abuse Program, has been recognized nationally for her “leadership, significant contributions, dedication and accomplishments” in the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect.

Clayton won the 2012 commissioner’s award presented by the Department of Health and Human Services Administration on Children, Youth and Families.

The commissioner’s award recognizes exceptional contributions of child-abuse advocates in each state and will be formally presented at the 18th annual National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect in Washington, D.C., April 16-20. Dr. Clayton was nominated by the office of Gov. Bob McDonnell.
“We are so proud of her, and she truly deserves this award,” said Jane Hollingsworth, executive director of CHKD’s Child Abuse Program.

Clayton joined CHKD’s Child Abuse Program in 2004. During her tenure, she has been involved in the treatment and prosecution of hundreds of cases, while providing training and workshops to prosecutors, judges, therapists and court guardians in Virginia and throughout the nation. An expert in both the clinic and the courthouse, Clayton was named by Virginia Lawyer’s Weekly the most influential woman of 2010.
