Dedicated Alumni Honored by Pitt's Graduate School of Public Health


Four University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health alumni will be recognized for their outstanding service in the field of public health at the school’s Alumni Awards ceremony tonight.

“We are delighted to honor these distinguished alumni for their commitment to advancing public health through research, teaching and community service,” said Donald S. Burke, M.D., Pitt Public Health dean and UPMC-Jonas Salk Chair of Global Health.

  • Mary Patricia Nowalk, Ph.D., Class of 1993, will receive The Margaret F. Gloninger Service Award for her significant contributions to the community. An associate professor of family medicine in Pitt’s School of Medicine, Dr. Nowalk directs a Health Resources and Services Agency grant to fund primary medical and dental care for uninsured patients at the Matilda Theiss Health Center in Oak Hill. A registered dietician, she advises the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging on its congregate meal program. She serves on the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and the Senior Companion Program.
  • Anita Caufield, M.H.A., Class of 1984, will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award for Teaching and Dissemination in recognition of her leadership in developing educational programming for a variety of nonprofit scientific, engineering, product development and biotech professional associations. As president and executive producer of the Forecast Technology Group, Ms. Caufield has parlayed her health care administration background into establishing a successful consulting business serving smaller scientific research societies, universities and foundations.
  • Coleen Boyle, Ph.D., Class of 1981, will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award for Research in recognition of her work as director of the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She was the recipient of the CDC Charles C. Shepard Award for scientific excellence in 1997 and 2004, and has authored or co-authored more than 120 peer-reviewed and other scientific publications.
  • William Holman, M.H.A., Class of 1979, will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award for Practice, recognizing 12 years of guidance of the Baton Rouge General Medical Center and General Health System as its president and CEO. Drawing on his decades of experience in health care management, Mr. Holman’s leadership efforts were noted in 2004, when the management team that he assembled was named “Top Leadership Team in the Nation” by HealthLeaders magazine. He is chair of the Capital Area American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Board of Directors and is the immediate chair for the Louisiana Hospital Association.
  • Charles Christen, Dr.P.H., Class of 2010; Gregory Homish, Ph.D., Class of 2003; and Daniel Patterson, M.S., Class of 2012, will be inducted into Delta Omega, an honorary society for graduate studies in public health that recognizes merit and encourages further excellence in, and devotion to, public health work.
