National Public Health Week

On April 1, the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health will kick off the morning with the first in a series of poster sessions sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs. In this annual student research competition, students will present their findings during one of six poster sessions throughout the week where faculty will judge presentations. The winners will be invited to deliver oral presentations during the Dean’s Day Awards Ceremony on April 15. All the poster sessions will take place in 309 Parran Hall.

Later that afternoon, Mr. Ian Rosenberger, founder of the nonprofit Team Tassy and for-profit Thread LLC, will give a free talk titled “Eliminating Abject Poverty.” A former contestant on CBS: Survivor Palau, Mr. Rosenberger visited Haiti just after the 2010 earthquake decimated the country. He will discuss his experience in Haiti, explain how Team Tassy came to be, and discuss the ROI of his programs. Mr. Tassy Fils-Aime, the Team Tassy family liaison, will tell his personal story of how he met Mr. Rosenberger and how volunteers saved his life. The talk, sponsored by the Doctoral Student Organization, is from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in room A115 Crabtree. It is open to the public and advanced registration is not required, but encouraged by emailing dsogsph@pitt.edu.

On April 2, the School will host Dr. Nancy Kass, the Phoebe R. Berman Professor of Bioethics and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. She will be giving a lecture titled “Obesity, Public Health, and Ethics: When Can We Interfere with Others for Their Own Good?” The lecture is from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in room A115 Crabtree Hall. It is free and open to the public.

On April 3, the School will host a central blood bank blood drive sponsored by the Student Government Association. Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood, and the winter season often leaves our region with a severe supply shortage. The drive is from 12-5 p.m. in room 109 Parran. Walk-ins are welcome.

On April 4, Ms. Roberta Patrizio of the maternal and child health division of the Allegheny County Health Department will give a free talk titled “Return on Investment: The Nurse Family Partnership Program.” She will discuss the ROI from evidence-based public health programs. The talk, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Public Health Training Center, is from 12 p.m.-1 p.m. in 109 Parran. It is open to the public and advanced registration is not required, except to view the live stream, available free to viewers who register here.

On April 5, the School will host a career development panel discussion sponsored by the Association of Women in Public Health. Guest participants include Dr. Virginia Dato, infectious disease physician with the Pennsylvania Department of Health Bureau of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, and Dr. Trisha Gadson, executive director of the Macedonia Family and Community Enrichment Center of Pittsburgh. The discussion will be from 12-2 p.m. in 109 Parran.
