Call for Applications:PHDL International Student Fellowships


The Public Health Dynamics Lab (PHDL) is requesting applications for an International Student Fellowship Award that provides $5,000 to a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health for a research experience abroad. The PHDL has partnered with research institutes in Taiwan, Brazil, Myanmar (Burma), Colombia, and South Africa to host Pitt Public Health students during the summer of 2015 for the duration of 8-12 weeks. During their project abroad, students will have the opportunity to work with researchers and students in the host institute on exciting infectious disease research projects. This international experience will provide students with an unforgettable and valuable research experience in a foreign setting. It will advance research skills in global infectious diseases and will provide an additional dimension to existing graduate programs. Students will also gain valuable inter-cultural collaboration skills and will have the opportunity to explore the culture and environment of their host country. MPH students can use this experience for their internship requirement. Eligibility - All graduate students in good standing at Pitt Public Health are eligible to apply - Applicants will be selected based on their motivation, skills, and academic performance - Quantitative skills and knowledge of a statistical package (SAS, STATA, R, ArcMap, etc.) are preferred but not required - Previous experience abroad is preferred but not required To Apply - Applications are due before 28 February 2015, 5pm EST, by email to Sharon Crow (crows@edc.pitt.edu). All applications must include the following: - Completed application form - CV including undergraduate GPA, language skills, and software skills - Unofficial Pitt Public Health transcript Award All applications will be reviewed by a team of PHDL faculty and the winning applicants will be contacted by March 6, 2015. The selected applicants will receive an award of $5,000 toward the expenses of their research experience and will be matched to a host institute based on their interest and host requirements. Students will stay abroad for a minimum of 8 weeks and will be responsible for their own logistics arrangements, including relevant visa and insurance, with assistance from their host institute. Students will be responsible for any cost that exceeds the stipend amount. Students will be supervised by Dr. Wilbert van Panhuis at Pitt Public Health and will prepare for their project abroad through regular meetings with Dr. Van Panhuis. Students can select an alternative or additional supervisor if desired. Students will give a presentation about their experience during a PHDL International Students Seminar.
