University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences Announce Faculty, Staff Achievements


The faculty, staff and students of the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences often are recognized by academic and scientific societies and other prestigious organizations for their significant achievements and exceptional leadership. Among those whose work has been acknowledged recently with awards and accolades are the following:

  • Lisa Bodnar, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.D., associate professor, Graduate School of Public Health, received a 2013 Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award in the Junior Scholar category for her research in addressing the role of maternal nutrition in adverse pregnancy outcomes. The award is given to faculty members within the Graduate School of Public Health who are nominated by their colleagues and peers.
  • Amy Calabrese Donihi, Pharm.D., and Kim C. Coley, Pharm.D., F.C.C.P., associate professor and professor respectively, School of Pharmacy, were awarded funding by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Research and Education Foundation for their research on the implementation of a program that enables the dispensing of multidose medications to patients when they are discharged from the hospital.
  • Julien J. Fourcade, Pharm.D., Ph.D., research instructor, University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, received the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Bristol-Myers Squibb Oncology Scholar-in-Training Award for his National Institutes of Health-funded clinical trial on peptide vaccine for patients with advanced melanoma. He will present his research at the AACR Annual Meeting 2013 in Washington, D.C., in April.
  • Bruce A. Freeman, Ph.D., professor and chair, School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology, was the recipient of the Pennsylvania Bio’s 2012 Scientific Achievement Award for his contributions to the advancements in scientific knowledge, innovation and patient care within the fields of biochemistry and pharmacology. Dr. Freeman was honored at the Pennsylvania Bio’s Annual Dinner and Awards Celebration in March at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
  • Mark Gladwin, M.D., and Naftali Kaminski, M.D., chief and director respectively, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, School of Medicine, will receive the Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments at the annual American Thoracic Society national convention in May.
  • Dio Kavalieratos, Ph.D., postdoctoral student, RAND-University of Pittsburgh Health Institute, was selected by The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) to receive the organization’s Young Investigator Award. He presented his abstract titled “What Do Providers Perceive as Patient-level Palliative Care Uptake Barriers in Heart Failure? A Qualitative Analysis” to the 2013 AAHPM Scientific Subcommittee in March in New Orleans.
  • Mary L. Marazita, Ph.D., F.A.C.M.G., School of Dental Medicine, and corresponding authors, received the 2013 International Association for Dental Research (IADR)/American Association for Dental Research (ADA) William J. Gies Award for their research paper titled “Genome-wide Association Scan for Childhood Caries Implicates Novel Genes,” which identified genetic factors linked to dental cavities. The award is given to the best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research and was presented in March in Seattle.
  • Melissa Somma McGivney, Pharm.D., F.C.C.P., associate professor, School of Pharmacy, and director, Community Pharmacy Residency Program, was elected by the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Educational Foundation as president for the foundation’s board of directors. In this role, Dr. McGivney will help establish the strategic direction of the foundation. Its mission is to foster research, education and the development of practice models that advance patient care.
  • Sara L. Peterson, M.B.A., C.P.O., prosthetic coordinator, orthotics and prosthetics instructor, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, was recently inducted into the 2013 class of Fellows by the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists during the organizations 39th Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium. This prestigious award is given to practitioners who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to patient care through the pursuit of continuing education and service to their community. Ms. Peterson is one of 14 practitioners in the nation to receive this distinction.
