James Collins to Serve as HPM Executive in Residence

The Department of Health Policy & Management is pleased to announce that James Collins, MPH (health administration ’87), president and chief executive officer of St. Clair Hospital in Pittsburgh, will be the Executive in Residence for the 2009-2010 Academic Year. The purpose of the Executive in Residence program is to foster better relationships between the Health Administration Program and the world of practice for the advantage of both the students and faculty of the program.

Collins is only the third president and CEO in St. Clair’s 55-year history, a post he has held since April 2006. He was named president and CEO of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in 1999. He began his career in health administration at West Penn in 1989, serving as vice president until 1995. He was then promoted to senior vice president of managed care and strategic development for The Western Pennsylvania Healthcare System, the parent corporation of West Penn. Beginning in 1998, he concurrently served as president and CEO of another of its subsidiaries, Suburban General Hospital. In 1992, the American College of Healthcare Executives recognized him with the Regent’s Award for Early Career Achievement.

St. Clair Hospital is a 329-bed independent, acute care facility that provides advanced, high quality healthcare to more than 300,000 residents of southwestern Pennsylvania. With 525 physicians and more than 2,000 employees, St. Clair Hospital is the largest employer in Pittsburgh’s South Hills.
