What is Public Health and why is it important?

The definition of public health is not static—rather it continuously evolves in response to the needs of communities and populations. While several formal definitions of “public health” exist, there are some common themes. Public health is:

  • A field that strives to ensure conditions in which populations can be healthy.
  • An organized, collaborative, and interdisciplinary field.
  • Focused on addressing the health concerns of communities and populations, particularly those at risk.
  • A discipline that emphasizes the application of health promotion and disease prevention programs and technologies.

Public health is important because it addresses broad issues that can affect the health and well-being of communities, populations, and societies.  Almost everyone has been a beneficiary of a public health initiative.

Some notable public health achievements are:

  • Vaccination programs, such as polio, tetanus, and measles, mumps, and rubella.
  • Motor vehicle safety laws.
  • Restrictions on tobacco sales and use.
  • Clean air and water standards.
