Peace Corps Master's International
GSPH is excited to announce the Peace Corps Master’s International (MI) Track as part of our MPH programs in either the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences or Infectious Diseases and Microbiology (with a concentration in Community and Behavioral Intervention of Infectious Diseases.)
The goal of the Peace Corps MI Track at GSPH is to give students the opportunity to learn and gain experience in public health in an international setting and foster a nuanced understanding of the challenges and opportunities within global health. Students of public health often seek educational experiences where they can be of service and make a lasting contribution to a community while learning how to excel in their chosen field. With today’s emphasis on global health at the forefront of many students’ minds, that community may be somewhere around the world. GSPH’s MI Track will aid students in gaining practical and relevant skills in the core disciplines of public health, problem solving and project management in resource poor settings, and in working with people from a culturally different background. Global Health Certificate Program
Global Health refers to health issues that transcend national boundaries. Global health today faces unprecedented challenges. The need of the world's poor for health care is greater now than ever before. In particular, the third world faces demographic and epidemiological concerns that have never previously been encountered. Its population is slowly shifting from environments with exposure to infectious diseases to localities with a higher prevalence of risk factors for non-communicable diseases like motor vehicle accidents, unsafe workplaces, and air pollution. Concurrently, individual and social behaviors are changing in a manner than increases the risk of developing chronic diseases. Developing countries are in the unenviable position of having to plan for the control of communicable diseases at the same time that non-communicable diseases are becoming important. On a positive note, our knowledge of these needs has increased and so has our ability to address them.
The graduate level Certificate in Global Health is designed to educate students about current health patterns and transitions occurring globally, and the effect of dynamic global environmental, political, economic, health care and social changes on these patterns. It is designed to prepare students for occupations that increasingly demand critical interdisciplinary and international thinking skills, and perspectives in health care or affiliated fields.
