Student Life

Many of you may be asking why I should enroll in the Graduate School of Public Health. There are many reasons from the dynamic learning environment to the excellent student faculty ratio to the affordable cost of living in Pittsburgh.

Students here have access to the full range of on-campus activities and events offered by a major public research university like Pitt. This includes a diverse faith-based community on campus, and plenty of opportunities for volunteering and public service. Pursuit of a graduate degree is always challenging, but, at GSPH, the rewards of student life are many. Consider, for instance, our annual International Dinner, where students, faculty, and staff gather for a festive pot-luck buffet featuring food and entertainment from around the world.  One in four GSPH students hails from a homeland outside the US, so the opportunities for cultural exchange and international friendships are many.

  • Students can and do make a difference at GSPH. Students participate fully in the school’s decision-making processes through representation on standing committees, and through the Student Government Association, which stresses direct student involvement in public health issues and provides opportunities for social interaction.
  • We look for many ways to celebrate our students’ accomplishments. One valued tradition is our annual Dean’s Day, when students present their research and compete for monetary awards for the best presentations.
  • Our student lounge and the Community Commons provide perfects place for study, solitude, or socializing. Whether working individually or in a team, students use the lounges as comfortable gathering places. A state-of-the-art computer lab gives students access to the internet and other resources. Both areas are equipped for wireless internet access.
  • Student accomplishments take center stage at the annual Convocation and the Alumni Dinner.
  • GSPH provides travel grants for students to present at national and international conferences.
  • Each year, selected students receive a stipend for a trip to the American Public Health Association annual meeting.
  • GSPH students interact with other graduate and professional students from across the campus, creating a rich intellectual and social life.
