Personal Statement

Dr. Miljkovic's research focuses on the epidemiology of obesity, body fat distribution and ectopic fat deposition, and associated cardiometabolic disorders such as diabetes, fatty liver, dyslipidemia, inflammation, and hypertension. Work is ongoing to better understand: 1)  the patterns and correlates of change in body fat distribution and ectopic fat  compartments with aging; 2) the relationship between these fat depots, cardiometabolic risk factors, and the development of diabates and other cardiometabolic diseases; 3) the ethnic and racial differences in body fat distribution and ectopic fat depots, and their importance for observed ethnic and racial differences in rates of diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases; and 4) identify novel risk factors for diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases.

Another major focus of Dr. Miljkovic's research is the epidemiology of skeletal muscle aging, in particular, the loss of skeletal muscle mass with aging accompanied by parallel fat infiltration in the muscle (i.e., myosteatosis),  their aging-related changes, etiology, and clinical consequences.
