This year Biostatistics Professor Abdus Wahed was honored by Pitt Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor Patricia E. Beeson for excellence in student mentoring. Each year the University honors a select few faculty for outstanding student mentorship. “This year’s faculty winners of the Excellence in Mentoring Awards have made exceptional contributions to their academic disciplines and to the development of our graduate students,” said Provost Beeson at the awards ceremony. “This award honors faculty for the important impact they have made in the lives of graduate students they have mentored and the roles they play in ensuring the success of the next generation of scholars.” The Provost commented that “Your [Wahed’s] individual efforts stand as an inspiring example of excellence in the role of graduate advisor. This honor, more particularly, recognizes your commitment to mentoring and your success in working with doctoral students. Drawing on your individual understanding of biostatistical research methods, you have helped your students to develop the necessary skills to succeed as scientists, including how to cope effectively in difficult times when their research may hit an impasse. Through continued commitment to your advisees, you have played an important role in their academic careers as well as their professional development. As a result, your students have gone on to accomplished careers as biostatisticians, researcher scientists, and faculty members.
