Prescription Drug Abuse and the Emergence of Hepatitis C in Rural Appalachia

Prescription drug abuse has emerged as a major public health concern in the past decade, and rural areas of the U.S. have been particularly vulnerable. Data will be presented from a longitudinal cohort of prescription drug user in rural Appalachian Kentucky demonstrating the link between prescription drug abuse and the hepatitis C epidemic, as well as increased risk for HIV in the region.
